How to Flash Kernel On HTC Androids Via Hboot

Recently, I discussed how to flash kernel on android devices via custom recovery like CWM, TWRP or 4EXT. Here, I would be discussing how to flash kernel on HTC android devices via hboot.

Flash Kernel On HTC Androids Via Hboot

Before a kernel can be flashed via hboot on HTC android devices, it has to be compressed in a flashable zip file. And one more thing, the HCT android device must be S-Off otherwise; the zip file must be properly signed.

In most cases, to S-off your HTC android device is easier than to looking for signed kernel zip file for a particular HTC device. So, I would assume that you are flashing kernel on an S-off HTC android device in the guides below.

Proceed to the Guides Below;
1- Download the kernel for the particular HTC device for which you wish to flash the kernel.

2- Rename the downloaded file to the flash.zip name of the HTC, usually; this is the model number of the HTC phone. E.g PK76IMG.zip for HTC One V.

3- Put the renamed kernel zip file in the root of the SD Card (Not in any folder).

4- Reboot the phone to hboot using the right key conbinations usually, by pressing the Power + the Volume Down buttons together while the phone is off.

5- Wait few seconds for the phone to complete scanning the memory card. If all things are normal, the phone should ask 'Do you want to start the update?', press the volume up button to continue.

6- Wait for the update process to complete and then, reboot the phone.

NOTE:
- Kernels are very specific with ROMs. You need to be sure that the kernel you have downloaded is for the particular phone you wish to flash it on.

- In the case of HTC phones that does not have Memory Slot, like the HTC M7, this method cannot be used to flash kernel on them. A slightly different method which is discussed in this post could be used.

Solution: All Samsung Androids PC Copy/Move Files Issue

On several occasions, I have come across questions about some people having problems copying/moving files to/fro their Samsung android devices to their PCs especially; when the device has just been updated or factory reseted.

This happens mostly because the Mass Storage on most of the Samsung android devices are protected and restricted from certain operations. To be able to copy and move files to/fro your PCs to such Samsung android device, you have two options.
1- Download and install Samsung Kies on your PC.
2- Enable RWXRWXRW access (Rights) on the Mass Storage.

Option 1: Download And Install Samsung Kies

This option is temporary because you need to download and install Samsung Kies on every PC from or to which you wish to copy files from and vice versa.

Option 2: Enable RWXRWXRW access on the Mass Storage

This option is permanent and it requires root access thus; the phone must be rooted for this option to work.

How to Do it

1- If your Samsung android device is not rooted, root it by following the link above.

2- Download and install Root Browser from the PlayStore.

3- Open Root Browser and grand it root access.

4- Navigate to the device's Mass Storage, tap and hold the Mass Storage until some options pop up.

5- From the options, select Permissions and then; tick/mark all the three boxes under the Read, Write and Execute options.

6- Click OK and go back.

Now, you can connect your phone to any PC and be able to copy and move your files as you wish between the PCs and your phone without Samsung Kies been installed on the PC.

Solution: PlayStore, Gmail And Other Google Apps Connection Problems

In case any of the Google Applications (like PlayStore, Gmail etc) on your android device fails to connect to the internet or you are unable to download through them, here is how to solve the problem once and for all.

Please note that this solution requires that your android device be rooted. And I have confirmed this solution only on android 4.X.X upwards.

How to Correct PlayStore And Other Google Apps Connection Error

1- If your android device is not rooted, root it first.

2- Download and install any root file browser like Root Browser, ES File Explorer amongst others from the PlayStore.

3- Open the root explorer application and grant it root access.

4- Now, go to the phone's memory, locate etc folder. Inside the etc, locate hosts file and delete it.

5- Restart the phone and enjoy!

How to Solve Battery Issues On Android -Part 2

Recently, I published an article that discusses the solutions to the common battery issues of android devices. Like when your android device fails to charge, when the android device charges but fails to retain current and other battery problems alike.

If you missed the earlier solutions discussed, you should check here; Solutions: Battery Not Charging Issue of Android Devices.

Here, I would discuss another discovery I found for the battery issues most android devices develop. I discover this while working on an HTC One X in my workshop. The HTC One X was brought for the same battery issue.

When the HTC One X was brought, it charges but it does not retain current. You could charge the phone for 24hrs and in the end, it might still end up having just 20% left.

So, based on the recent experience I have had on phones having similar problems, I proceeded to repair the phone.

I noticed that everything on the phone were still stock. By this I mean, the phone had not been tampered with before and there was no sign that any engineer had worked on the phone. For this reason, I proceeded with caution.

How I Resolved the Battery Issue

Since the HTC One X was still stock, I could not have been able to do much on it until I unlocked its bootloader and flashed a custom recovery on it.

How to Flash Custom Recovery On HTC Androids
So,
1- I unlocked the phone's bootloader.
2- Flashed a custom recovery, TWRP Custom Recovery to be precise.
So, at this point, I checked to see progress on the phone so far.

Guess What! I charged the phone for about 20mins and the battery metre recorded 17% charged!
I put off the phone and charged it again for 30mins. I put on the phone and noticed 27% charged on the battery metre. The phone works fine till now, at least; no battery problem again.

Conclusion
Most recent custom recoveries like TWRP, CWM and 4EXT have better battery managment especially; 4EXT recovery.

Solutions: Battery Not Charging Issues On Androids

On one of the threads I manage on NL, I have seen many posts on issues relating to 'battery not charging issues' or 'battery never get fully charged' of android devices and as a practicing phone software repairs engineer, I have recommended two solutions that I have used and confirmed working in correcting android battery issues; so I decide to explain the step by step guides here on this page.

Signs/Effects On the Phone

If you notice any of the following signs or effects on the phone, then, these solutions should work magic on your phone.
1- If you notcie crossed bars (usually in red colour), on the phone's battery bars; either while charging or not.
2- If you notice that the phone's battery never gets fully charged.
3- If the phone charges but fails to retain battery.
Then, you can give these corrective messures a try, starting from the first one.

Android Battery Not Charging Solutions
Solution 1
Wipe battery stats: to wipe the battery stats of your android device, you need to have a custom recovery flashed on the phone. Either CWM, TWRP, 4EXT or any other custom recovery that has Battery Stat options could be used.

The method for flashing custom recovery on android devices vary. You can use the Search Box above to search for the method that can be used to flash custom recovery on your android device or better still, you can use Google.

Solution 2
Flash A New Kernel: this particular solution is 90% certain to work and correct the battery issues on any android device but, it's more advanced.

To flash a new kernel on the phone, a custom recovery is also required and the kernel has to be for the exact phone. -Be warned! Flashing a wrong kernel could brick the phone.
For a detailed info on how to flash kernel, click here.

How to Flash A Kernel On Android

Kernel is known to be the intermediary between the softwares and the hardwares of an android device and as a result of this, it comes built-in with every android ROMs.

The kernel can be flashed separately in an android device therefore; it can be upgraded or downgraded depending on the ROM you have on the phone however, the kernel is very specific with ROMs. Every ROM with kernels specifically built for it.

How to Flash Kernel On Android

Mostly, custom recovery is required to flash a kernel except in the case of HTC devices with unlocked bootloader and S-Off whose kernels can be flashed using flashable zip files and Samsung phones whose kernel can be flashed using ODIN.

How to Flash Kernel Via Custom Recovery

1- Download the specific kernel for the phone via Google, or if you have specific link to download from. Just make sure that the kernel is for the phone.

2- Put the downloaded kernel in the root folder of your SD Card or the phone's Mass Storage.

3- Reboot the phone to recovery using the right key combinations for the phone or by using the command line adb reboot recovery

4- From the recovery, wipe the cache + Delvik

5- From the recovery, choose Install ZIP then, select Choose ZIP from SD Card. Confirm the selection and wait for the process to complete and reboot the phone.

To confirm your new kernel go to Settings <<>> About Phone <<>> Baseband Version

The Kernel version is found somewhere around there usually; right after the baseband version.

Safety TIP:
Do always backup the whole content of your phone using a Custom Recovery before you attempt to flash any Kernel file on your phone.

In case anything goes wrong, you would be able to reverse all the actions.
