Flashed New ROM? How to Correct Bootloop, Hang On Boot Errors

In case you have just flashed a new ROM on your android device and you discover that the phone hangs on the first main logo whenevr you try to boot the phone on or, that the phone restarts whenevr it's booting on; within this write up, we discuss possible errors you may have made and how to correct them.

The Possible Mistakes/Errors you May Have Made

First, we would be discussing the possible mistakes or errors you may have made either during the process of flashing the new ROM or in the beginning, while trying to get the root access on the phone so that a custom recovery.img could be flashed on the phone. So, read ahead carefully and check if any of the points mentioned below is your case.

1- S-On/S-Off: check to confirm that the phone you have flashed a new custom ROM on is either S-On or S-off, if it is an HTC android phone. Most HTC android devices comes with S-On, meaning Security-On. This S-On flag checks to make sure that all the partitions of the phone are truly from HTC, So, whenever an unsigned version .img file is detected on the phone, the S-On flag prevents the phone from booting into android.

2- Bootloader, radio or ADSP Version: Another thing that may prevent the phone from booting into android is either bootloader, radio or ADSP. If this is the case, the phone does not hang on the first logo screen rather, it boots on and restarts automatically while loading.

3- Data Wipe/Factory Reset: Did you remember to factory reset or do data wipe while on the recovery before you flashed the new ROM? This is also one of the mistakes that may result in the bootloop. Ordinarilly, whenever a new ROM is to be flashed on an android device, a factory reset or data wipe is expected to be done in the recovery before a new ROM could be flashed otherwise, the phone fails to boot on.

Your Solutions

Of course, to every problem, there is always a solution except that you don't yet know of it yet.

Solution 1: if the number point discussed above is your case, it means you have flashed a new ROM on an HTC phone that has S-On. Below here is how to solve your kind of problem;
1- Locate the zip file of the ROM you have flashed on the phone and extract it into a folder on your PC.
2- Open the ROM's extracted folder, locate the file named " boot.img " and copy it to your ADB folder.
For detailed info about ADB, click here.
3- Now, open command prompt on the PC then; point to the ADB folder on the PC by following the guides on the ADB link just above.
4- Finally, boot the phone into hboot, connect the phone to the PC, wait for the drivers to install and flash the boot.img file you copied on the ADB folder by typing " fastboot flash boot boot.img " on the command prompt and hit the enter key. Wait for the process to complete then, reboot your phone.

2-: if by looking at the errors, you observe that the numbers point is likely your case, you simply need to download an updated version of boot loader for your device and flash it on the phone. In most cases, updating the bootloader, radio, adsp together gives better result and android experience.
A Google Search for your device's bootloader should yield a needed result.

3-: if neither the number one (1) nor the number two (2) option has worked for you, you should try to reflash the ROM using the proper procedure I.e;
- Boot to recovery
- Wipe data/factory reset < br /> - Wipe cache
- Wipe delvic cache
- Then; flash the ROM

NoteIf none of these options has worked for you, the ROM you are flashing is most likely corrupted, simply download another ROM and flash it on the phone.

How to Upgrade An Android Device

Within this write up, we discuss how an android device could be upgraded, steps to take and the guides to follow so, just read ahead.

To upgrade an android device, you have two options; you either wait for the phone manufacturer to push the updated version of the ROM for your device to it or, you may download an upgraded custom ROM from the internet and flash it on the phone. Either ways, your android device would be upgraded however, waiting for the manufacturer may take forever and this is the reason you might prefer the custom ROM.

Before an android device could be upgraded by a means of custom ROM, that particular android device has to be rooted or have an unlocked boot loader.

Why Root or Unlock Boot loader Prior to Upgrade?

Your android device has to be rooted or have its boot loader unlocked before you can be able to upgrade it by means of custom ROM only for one reason; custom recovery

Custom Recovery is the access room for unlimited personalization and better performance for your android device but the Root Access and the Boot loader are the only keys to this room; the Custom Recovery.

So, to be able to flash a Custom Recovery on your android device, you need to either Root the phone or unlock its Boot loader

How to Flash A Custom Recovery On Android Device

To flash a custom recovery on an android device, you have two known means to do that;
1- By Means of Root Access: if your android device is rooted, you can simply do a search for " recovery tools " from the Play Store and select from the results the search brings. You should be able to find an app that will help you flash custom recovery on your android device from the Play Store. Most of these apps can detect your phone model, download a custom recovery.img file for you and flash it directly. Or, alternatively, you can download custom recovery.img file for your android device from here and choose the " Other " option from any of these apps to flash the recovery.img file you may have downloaded.

2- By Means of Unlocked Boot loader: this method requires your PC and that you have a fair knowledge of Command Prompt and ADB Command lines. To learn about the ADB Commands and how to set it up, click here.
Once you have unlocked the boot loader of your android device, simply download the recovery.img file for your android device and place it on the same folder as your ADB Tools. Then, do the followings;
i- On your phone, go to Menu<<>>Settings<<>>Applications<<>>Development (for android 2.3 downward) and Menu<<>>Settings<<>>Developer Options (for android 4.0 upward) then, enable USB Debugging on the phone.
ii- Download and install the specific android drivers for your phone on the PC.
iii- Now, connect the phone to the PC and wait patiently for the PC to detect and install the phone's drivers. You can now open command prompt and point to your ADB Folder from the command prompt by typing " adb cd c:\adb ".
iv- On the command prompt, type " adb devices " to confirm that the PC has connected to your phone then; type " adb reboot bootloader " ; the phone should shut down and reboot to bootloader.
v- Now, wait few seconds for the PC to install the phone's drivers again then, type " fastboot devices " on command prompt - this is to confirm that the PC is still connected to the phone.
vi- And finally, type " fastboot flash recovery recovery.img " and wait for the process to complete.

Pro Tip: You should rename the recovery.img file you may have downloaded for your device to: " recovery " otherwise, the PC won't recognise the command line. And DO NOT tamper the .img suffix of the file.

Congratulations! You now have custom recovery flashed on your android device. You can now proceed to flash any ROM or MOD and enjoy your android device like never!

How to Unlock Bootloader or Root your Android Device

To unlock your android devices' bootloader, you may have to refer to the manufacturer's support page on their website or do a Google Search for your device.

As for the root access, there are several procedures for rooting an android device and NOT all the methods work for all android devices so, you have to look for specific method that works for your particular device.

How to Flash New ROM On Android Device

I am sure that, by reading this article, you probably know what an Android ROM is already and wants to know how to flash a new ROM on an android device.

Well, in case you don't know what an android ROM is; the ROM contains virtually, all the codes and data files that make up android OS. Each Android device has its own ROM image that contains files and codes needed to boot the device up and run Android on it.

How to Flash New ROM on Android Device

Depending on the type of ROM you wish to flash on your device, there are different methods of flashing a new ROM on an android device.
As discussed earlier on Aryk Wiki, the are two types of ROM namely;
Stock ROM and;
Custom ROM

Meanwhile, to flash Custom ROM on an android device, you need to have Custom Recovery flashed on the device already. However, to flash a Stock ROM on an Android device, it is not necessary to have a Custom Recovery on the device thus; any recovery can be used to flash a Stock ROM on an android device since the flashing process of a Stock ROM is being done from the bootloader.

How to Flash A New Custom ROM

1- First, you have to download the ROM.zip file or package that corresponds to the version of android device on which you are flashing the ROM. E.g, if the android device you are using is Samsung i9300, you need to download the exact ROM for that phone.

2- Put the ROM.zip file or package on the root of your SD Card thus, directly on the SD Card and not in any folder of the SD Card.

3- Now, boot the phone into the recovery mode. You can boot the phone into the recovery mode by using the recovery short cuts (combination of buttons) or using the command prompt command line; adb reboot recovery (does not work for all android devices).

4- Once in the recovery, do a factory reset of that phone and sometimes, you may wipe the delvic+cache as well.
5- Select the "Install Zip from SD Card" option then; "Choose zip from SD Card".

6- Confirm that you want to flash the file you have selected and wait patiently until the process completes then; reboot your phone.

Pro Tip: Although, most custom ROMs can work, run and function fully without gapps, but it is strongly recommended that you flash the appropriate gapps on the device after a new ROM is flashed. Also, remember that you need to have a Custom recovery flashed on your android device before a new Custom ROM could be flashed.

Refer to this page for info on how to flash gapps on an android device.

How to Flash A New Stock ROM on An Android Device

Depending on the one you have at your disposal, the Stock ROM is either made in .msi, .exe, or .zip format. If you have downloaded either the .msi or .exe format of the Stock ROM, the whole process has to be done on your PC however, if you have downloaded the .zip format of the Stock ROM, it should be done on your phone.

Unlike the Custom ROM, it is NOT necessary to have a custom recovery before a Stock ROM could be flashed on an android device since the process is being done from the bootloader.

It should also be stated that the process for flashing a Stock ROM on android devices are not the same, you need to know the specific guide or instructions to flash Stock ROM on a specific android device.

If you require tutorial on how to flash a Stock ROM on a specific android device, you may post your comments or opinion in the comment box below or use the Contact Us page.
